北京四合院住宅的大门，从建筑形式上可分为两类，一类是由一间或若干间房屋构成的屋宇式大门，另一类是在院墙合陇处建造的墙垣式门。设屋宇是大门的住宅一般是有官阶地位或者经济实力的社会中上层阶级；设墙垣式大门的住宅，则多为社会下层普通百姓居住。
墙垣门最普遍、最常见的形式是小门楼形式，它的样式尽管很多，但造型上基本大同小异，主要是由腿子、门楣、屋面、脊饰的部分组成，一般都比较简单朴素。也有为数不多的豪华小门楼，门楣以上遍施砖雕，虽不气派但十分华丽。
Qiangyuan Gate
A small entrance is the most popular and widespread type of a Qiangyuan gate. Although it encompasses many styles, they usually are simple and plain. A few Qiangyuan gates are more refined, the brick above the lintel being decorated with carvings. Nonetheless, they are not to be compared with the sort seen in mansions belonging to feudal officials which are splendid, with individual exquisite and elegant touches.
